Preventing Diabetes
Although it's not possible to prevent type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can be, especially if you currently have prediabetes. It's necessary to take preventive actions because diabetes heightens the risk of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke, and lower limb amputation.
Here are a few strategies to prevent or delay the onset of the disease:
- Manage Your Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight significantly helps in controlling blood sugar levels.
- Stay Active: Exercise regularly, such as walking for 30 minutes on most days, can help with blood sugar control as well as managing your weight.
- Eat Healthy: Adopting a balanced diet comprising whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Minimize intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and unhealthy fats.
- Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep nightly, as it can help with blood sugar regulation. Inadequate sleep can disrupt hormones that regulate blood sugar.
- Quit Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of diabetes. Quitting smoking not only reduces diabetes risk but also mitigates other health complications.
- Manage Your Stress: Meditating, practicing yoga, or spending time outdoors are great ways to cope with stress. Elevated stress levels can impact blood sugar levels.
